Charles McCarthy Oval is a low maintenance sports ground surrounded by reasonably high-quality remnant vegetation, particularly ground layer species.

It is used on an irregular basis for AFL football training by the Portarlington Football Club (established 1874) and as a lower grade cricket ground by St Leonards Cricket Club (established 1947).
