Livingstone Recreation Reserve, Cranbourne, Victoria.

Final score.

While there was not much action on the scoreboard, there was plenty of pressure on a sunny, breezy Sunday morning at Livingstone Recreation Reserve.

A close game is a good game and so it proved in the FIDA  league C Grade clash of the blue and gold feathers: the Cranbourne Eagles hosting the Williamstown Seagulls.

The game was mainly played between the wide open spaces of the half-back lines, with forays deep into the forward line proving precious (but often fruitless).

The guests managed some points in the first half and then a goal with the wind in the third quarter looked like it could be decisive.  With the breeze at their backs, though, the home team rallied, scoring a goal  late in the final quarter.

It seemed the siren could not come soon enough for the Seagulls, but they kept the ball moving and out of harm’s way: 1.4 (10) to 1.1.(7).

Best players for each team? The old-fashioned ‘Team effort’. (With a special mention to the Seagulls assistant coach/runner, who covered a lot of ground – even before the first ball-up – ensuring ‘non-tackle’ players were in their correct positions.)

Eagles at quarter time.
Seagulls at half-time.

Next week the Seagulls host Lower Plenty in A Grade and C Grade games, for the Pride Round.

The Eagles’ C Grade team will travel to Ballarat while its B Grade teams heads to Monash.

FIDA is the Football Integration Development Association, a league  formed more than 30 years ago for players with special needs.

Plenty of flags inside the clubrooms of the Cranbourne Football Club (formed in 1869).
