Trugo is a peculiar sport, unique to a handful of inner Melbourne suburbs. It was born in the Newport railyards about a hundred years ago when some workers on smoko picked up their mallets and started knocking rubber washer rings the length of a train carriage. About 30 metres. It’s one of the few sports, at a guess, where you have your back to the target. Swinging the mallet between your legs looks both ungainly and dangerous. Described as a little like lawn bowls and a little like croquet, it is happily neither.
