Werribee, Victoria

New season, new scoreboard. Werribee Football Club unveiled its new scoreboard in the first round of the 2011 VFL season. The scoreboard’s debut on Saturday April 2 saw the Werribee reserves defeat Williamstown by eight points. Alas, in the main match Williamstown defeated the home side by 51 points, with Western Bulldogs veteran-turned-rookie Mitch Hahn kicking six goals.

In its 2011 season guide Werribee says the scoreboard ‘is set to be the best scoreboard outside elite AFL venues. Capable of providing increased value to sponsors and providing increased marketing for the club on match days. As what many will see as the final piece to the Avalon Airport Oval developments, it will once again put the club at the forefront of the VFL competition.’

In recent years Werribee has been a crucial stepping stone – or more a launching pad –  for Fremantle’s Michael Barlow, Geelong’s James Podsiadly and the Western Bulldogs’ Ben Hudson and Dale Morris.

In the final quarter of the 2010 home game against Williamstown, a Werribee official said to the scoreboard attendant, ‘How’s the pressure?’
