Around the soccer grounds: Sunshine, Victoria; AAMI Park, Victoria

This picture was taken at Somers Street stadium in Sunshine when Hajduk Split returned to Australia for the first time since 1949. Melbourne Croatia hosted a match on 10 June 1990, just after Croatia achieved its independence. Hajduk played in shirts without the red star for the first time for a generation. The Melbourne players are JosipBiskic, George Hannah and Andrew Marth.

New stadium, new scoreboard, new team. New rivalry. A-League newcomers Melbourne Heart defeated Melbourne Victory 2-1 in their first derby in 2010. The Victory turned the tables later in the 2010/11 season, winning 3-1. Since then Heart has won once and there have been three draws. The photo was taken before the first derby.

These photos and anecdotes are the third in our series of football (soccer) scoreboards, courtesy of football historian Roy Hay and Goal Weekly. Roy is a member of the Australian Society of Sports History, and director of  Sports and Editorial Services Australia. He writes a weekly column called Blast from the Past for Goal Weekly, where these, and other, scoreboard yarns were first published, in November 2011.
