Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa

LES EVERETT

There was no rest for the scoreboard attendants at Newlands on day two of the recent Test match between South Africa and Australia.

Things were quieter in 1998 as the Dockers trained in preparation for their Ansett Cup game with the Lions at the picturesque ground that is also used for rugby and soccer.

The game between Fremantle and Brisbane was a high-scoring affair with the Lions winning 125 to 103 – in fact each team put enough on the scoreboard to win the Test match.

The photo gives a clear indication of the height of giant ruckman Matthew Burton (24) in comparison to the fabled Table Mountain. Also in the photo are Andrew McGovern (far left), sprints coach Glen Ewen, Brodie Holland (17), James Walker (facing Burton) and Clem Michael (16).

The game was played on 22 February 1998.
