This is the leader-board after the final round of the 1972 Austrlian Open, played from 26 to 29 October. The next day Peter Thomson defeated David Graham in the play-off by six strokes. Graham’s fate was sealed on the first hole of the play-off when he hooked his first shot out of bounds and subsequently carded a double-bogey 7 to Thomson’s birdie 4.
Former Prime Minister Robert Menzies telegrammed Peter Thomson, saying ‘Delighted by your brilliant victory. Warm regards.’
Would latter-day prime ministers text congratulatory messages to Australian golf champions? Hawke, maybe. But Fraser, Keating, Howard, Gillard? What would Gough Whitlam make of golf?
