Box Hill Hawks won their second VFL flag when they defeated hot favourites Geelong at Etihad Stadium on Sunday 22 September. The Hawks set the pace with a seven goals to four goals first quarter and won comfortably by 21 points. The Norm Goss Medal for best afield was Box Hill’s Jonathon Simpkin, a former Geelong player. (VFA purists note: while the Hawthorn and Box Hill jumpers are very similar – brown and gold vertical stripes – the jumper worn by Box Hill looked very much like a Hawthorn jumper, with a small white mustang emblem on the front.)

Michael Costello also caught some action of the post-match kick-to-kick. “At the end of the match there was a sea of footballs being kicked on the arena. All this was happening while the presentations were going on – a most unusual backdrop!” Take a look on YouTube.
Hey Vin…an old Mustang supporter here.
Sadly it’s the Hawthorn seconds now to all the Box Hill supporters I know. Haven’t followed them for a number of years now. Won the first div 1 flag in 2001 wearing the Hawthorn lightening bolt atrocity with a micro mustang and now this. As soon as president John Ure, who long resisted Hawthorn’s ‘Hawthornification’ of the club, stepped aside the jumpers where changed to Hawthorn’s with a token, postage sized horse. The warm-up t-shirts are the only place you see the old Stanga jumpers now.
The change from Mustang to Hawks was poor enough…if ever two clubs were compatible, surely it was the eastern suburban, basically brown and gold, Hawthorn and Box Hill footy clubs! All that the Hawthornification has achieved is to drive away Mustang supporters. Weren’t heaps but there was a solid core…many of them Hawthorn or Richmond fans.
Oh well…end rant! Great to see Willy go it alone next year!
