Fertile footy soil in Cobden (Victoria)
Col Newcombe, a proud son of south-west Victoria, visited the Cobden ground for the 2014 Anzac Hampden league game against Camperdown.
The scoreboard shows the result of the reserves’ match. The Bombers defeated the visitors in the main game.
Cobden, a town of 1500, has produced more than its fair share of elite footballers, going back to Thorold Merrett (Collingwood), Alistair and Stewart Lord (Geelong) and John Rantall (South Melbourne and North Melbourne).
The clubrooms at Cobden currently feature banners of contemporary Cobden graduates Ben Cunnington (North Melbourne), Gary Rohan (Sydney), and Jackson and Zach Merrett (Essendon, great nephews of Thorold).
Rohan described the club as “bloody awesome” in a recent story by The Age’s Peter Hanlon, himself a son of the south-west. (Cobden’s finest harvest, May 25, 2014)
