It’s funny how things work out. A day after I took this terrible photo of our first table tennis scoreboard during a pennants match between Fremantle and Scarborough at Samson near Fremantle Craig Butt posted a rare ping pong tweet.
The tweet was about a visit to Australia by world champions Victor Barna and Richard Bergmann in 1949. The pair also went to Perth where, among other things, Barna played a short exhibition game with young Fremantle wiz kid Gordon Lee.
That’s Gordon, now one of the best veteran players in Australia, running the scoreboard at Samson Recreation Centre, home of the Fremantle Table Tennis Club – Gordon is the president.
By the way, a note for home players, games are now played to 11 (not 21). It’s much better.
Games played to 11? Gee, I’m just getting warmed up by then. Les, I appreciate it may not be the best of photos but still a pretty fair effort considering you took the photo one-handed, while smashing a crosscourt back-hand drive with your trusty left hand.
