ON Albany Highway just past Kojonup in WA is a sign that reads Tambellup 33.
Frankie and I turned off at that sign during a scoreboard trip in 2011, we wanted to check out the home town of the most famous 33 at Melbourne and Fremantle – Jeff Farmer. A short distance inland is another sign – Tambellup 33. Maybe the signs aren’t about kilometres but marketing.
Tambellup doesn’t have a team in the Ongerup Football League any more but the oval’s a beauty so Gnowangerup plays home games there. Our visit was on second semi final day when Jerramungup beat a strong finishing Lake Grace/Pingrup.
The scoreboard attendants were twins who played juniors for Gnowangerup, they enjoyed having the best view of the game and the team work involved in running the scoreboard. The board has been adapted to account for the demise of Tambellup.
Hawthorn premiership player Mark Williams is another Tambellup product. For more on Jeff Farmer and Tambellup read Sean Gorman’s account: http://aussierules.australianrules.com.au/2007stories/wizgorman.html
Note: Frankie is a miniature schnauzer. She likes the Dockers and Kojonup boy Peter Bell who once patted her on South Terrace, Fremantle.
A message from the song list rat from Denmark (WA)…
The great southern football league is a sadder place for not having a tambellup team. happy new year.
The new chairman of the AFL Commission, Richard Goyder, is also Tambellup born and bred. Producing he and Jeff Farmer is not a bad record for a town of less than 300 people!
