Footy has been around in Burnie for a long time but the Burnie Dockers were born in 1995 when, under new coach Peter German, the NTFL club decided to link itself with the new AFL team the Fremantle Dockers. (Eventually, after time in the WAFL with Peel and Subiaco, German landed himself a job as an assistant coach at Fremantle.)
Burnie is now in the Tasmanian State League and won a premiership in 2012 with former Essendon player Jason Laycock winning the Baldock Medal as best on ground.
At the 2013 AFL Draft the Fremantle Dockers picked up Burnie Dockers player Brady Grey – he made his debut in 2015.
Fremantle took a lead from Burnie earlier this year when they named David Mundy as captain – the Tassie Dockers made Kade Munday their captain in 2015.
